Charles Bragg
For many years, Charles Bragg has been internationally
acclaimed for his ability to capture the human comedy
on canvas, in etchings and in sculpted pieces.
A modern day master at classical satire, he has a unique
perspective and a very sardonic view of the world and
its inhabitants in general, with a particular focus on
the treatment of lifes troubles with lighthearted
humor and sharpened wit. He particularly enjoys targeting
the medical and legal professions, sports and political
figures, the Creation and religion, and a category he
fondly refers to as little naughties.
Considered by museums, art critics and collectors as one
of Americas most gifted artists of the twentieth
century, his technique is masterly, his subject matter
profound. For every image that evinces a smile, there
is another that is heart-stopping in its poignant commentary
on the human condition. For every cartoonish caricature
there is a stunningly beautiful portrait.
A populist as opposed to an esoteric artist, his work
has frequently appeared in the New York Times and Playboy
magazine and he is the author and/or subject of several
books including The Absurd Work of Charles Bragg (published
in 1980) Asuylum Earth (a compilation of short stories
and illustrations, published in 1995) and Charles Bragg:
The Works ! A Retrospective published in 1999, featuring
250 of his creative endeavors as well as stories and commentaries.
Charles has also been the subject of a PBS documentary
entitled Charles Bragg One of a Kind.
An incredible library of imagery is available for licensing
on almost any subject imaginable--including his caricatures,
his marvelous series of paintings in the style of
other famous artists, and the little naughties!
